The all new Regal Riviera Stadium 8 stands on the site of the long lost, jazz-era Riviera Theatre. There are approximately seats divided between the eight auditoriums. Regal’s Riviera opened on August 31, , and is the first new downtown cinema in Knoxville since the Roxy Theatre was built in the ’s. Regal partnered with the city of Knoxville to finance the roughly twelve million dollar facility.
With two “golden age” theatres on the same street (the Tennessee q.v. and the Bijou q.v.), both absolute jewels of their type, unfavorable comparisons between them and this new facility are going to be difficult to avoid.

The Regal Riviera Stadium 8 transports visitors back to the golden age of the original Riviera Theatre. The Rivieras spectacles of bright lights, prominent signage, and hit movies deliver the block of Homosexual Street back to the movie theater boom of the early 20th century. The legacy of the Riviera lives on nearly a century after the birth of the Rivieras name in downtown Knoxville.

The early 20th century saw the construction of several movie theaters on Gay Street, with each new theater surpassing the last in size and grandeur [18]. In the thirteen years prior to the opening of the Riviera Theater in , downtown Knoxville averaged more than one new movie theater per year [18]. The Riviera was looking to separate from the pack when Paramount Pictures signed on to function the new project through their subsidiary Wilby-Kincey [4]. The Regal Riviera 8 Cinema is in the heart of historic downtown Knoxville, on the site of a Regal cinema that burned in This area has an illustrious history, with buildings including the radio station where the teenage Dolly Parton made her musical debut and the landmark Art Deco S&W Cafeteria building.
When MBS Urban Initiatives CDE was approached by the Town of Knoxville, work on this eight-screen Cineplex had been halted because the City had not identified sufficient sources to conclude construction. MBS Urban Initiatives was immediately attracted to this development for the impact on downtown revitalization and decided to invest our New Markets Tax Credit allocation to build it happen.
The new cinema preserves and enhances the original structures: although it is large, with a capacity of nearly 2, seats, it was carefully designed around the historic structures, which have been redeveloped for shops, restaurants, and living space.
Besides employing hundreds of workers in both construction and operations and preserving a number of historic structures, this project has posi
