Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart discuss acting and LGBT rights
Two legends of acting, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, sat on a little stage under lights in front of a crowd - mostly populated by bloggers and journalists more than half their age - in the Fresh York offices of BuzzFeed in Manhattan's Flatiron District.
It was about halfway through their interview as part of the BuzzFeed Brews series (beer was readily available, although both actors opted for water given that they had a Broadway performance in just a not many hours), that the two men were asked what they'd like to be remembered for beyond their incredible serve on stage and in film and television.
McKellen was the first to communicate. "Well I’ve often thought my gravestone would say, ‘Here lies Gandalf, he came out.'" The crowd roared and clapped. McKellen, who is openly homosexual, added, "Those are two of the proudest achievements that I’ve got. And I think that I’ve been a part of the rapid, sensible movement towards an sympathy that gay people are the equal as the linger of you and should be treated equally by the law, by soc
For the record, Patrick Stewart is not gay. He actually married girlfriend Sunny Ozell in a ceremony last fall that was officiated by good friend Ian McKellen.
But the U.K's Guardian mistakenly outed the year-old Stewart on Monday after he praised actress Ellen Page for coming out over the weekend.
In a piece about Page going public, columnist Jane Czyzselska wrote: "Some same-sex attracted people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy because a high-profile and surprisingly politically alert young actress has decided not to play by the rules that so many closeted Hollywood actors are advised to go after if they are to enjoy mainstream success."
Stewart had a little entertainment with the snafu in a series of tweets, one of which referred to hanging out with "LGBT" people. Possibly a reference to McKellen, 74, who's openly gay?
The Guardian has since ran a correction notice stating: "The third paragraph originally said 'Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy.' This should have read 'Some peop
When"X-Men"star Patrick Stewart was "outed" as gay by the Guardian, he considered it quite a nice alter.
The Guardian made the error in an article about Ellen Page's coming out. In the piece, reporter Jane Czyzselska mistakenly identified Stewart as same-sex attracted when referencing the supportive message he sent the "Inception" actress after her big announcement.
A correction was later issued, reading:
This article was amended on 17 February The third paragraph originally said 'Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy'. This should have read 'Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy'.
After the Poynter Institute pointed out the Guardian's gaffe, Stewart weighed in.
One Twitter user noted that the Guardian might've misunderstood Stewart's friendships (he is a close companion of Sir Ian McKellen, who is gay).
Still, the "Star Trek" player looked on the luminous side.

Patrick Stewart Not Gay, Tweets About Being Falsely Outed by U.K. Paper (LOL!)
Patrick Stewart is not gay.
On Monday, however, the year-old actor was mistakenly outed as gay in an article about Ellen Page's recent coming out in the U.K. paper The Guardian. The paper quickly issued an apology for wrongly spotting Stewart as homosexual.
"This article was amended on 17 February ," reads an updated statement on the Guardian's story online. "The third paragraph originally said ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy'. This should have read ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy.'"
Ian McKellen's BFF was a good sport about the mistake and took to Twitter to humorously respond to the story. ".@Poynter But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and feast lots of chicken wings!" he tweeted earlier today.
He followed up with, "Well, @guardian it ma
