    What does it mean to be queer and a Traveller? Four people explain

    If you hadn’t noticed by the sea of rainbows (we’re living for them), June is Pride month; a month to honor the diversity, resilience and beauty of the LGBTQIA+ community.

    But it’s also Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History month - an initiative which started in to “tackle prejudice, doubt myths and to boost the voices of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in wider society,” through “celebration, education and raising awareness,” according to Friends, Families and Travellers, a philanthropy which works to complete discrimination against Gypsy, Roma and Travellers (GRT).

    There is still a lot of misunderstanding, stereotyping, and prejudice facing GRT communities. A recent survey establish that 62% of Gypsy or Travellers had experienced racial assault. It also showed that they were more likely to include poorer health outcomes and are times more at risk of not having access to health and social care than pale British people.

    A recent study by the Romanian National Council Against Discrimination found that LGBT people and Roma people are among the groups facing the most discrimination in Romania. In the last few years, more human rights organisations have started to speak to the double bigotry that people identifying with both of those groups have to deal with – LGBT Roma.

    In their case, the hate doesn&#;t just come from society in general, but also from within their own communities. For example, it&#;s not entirely uncommon to view the statement &#;no gypsies please&#; on profiles on Romanian LGBT dating sites, while, on the other hand, conservative Roma families believe homosexuality is wrong.

    In August , Ara Art, a human rights organisation founded by a group of Roma artists from the Czech Republic, hosted the first international Roma LGBT conference – in which a wide-range of gay and Roma activist groups from across the world took take part. In total, 28 organisations from 12 countries attended the conference, hoping to raise awareness within Ro

    Lesbian, gay, bisexual and genderqueer (LGBT) people from Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller (GRT) communities are not always treated with dignity and respect. Homophobia can be present and this can seriously impact the health and wellbeing of LGBT individuals. LGBT people tend to cloak this aspect of themselves due to their religious beliefs or their apprehend of rejection from their family and wider community
