Eye Color | Martha Plimpton and Noah Galvin talk about their mother/son connection on 'The Genuine O'Neals'NEW YORK -- The truth is out about the family members in "The Real O'Neals" and now comes the fun of seeing how they each cope with all of the changes those realities bring about. There's no point in pretending to be flawless anymore for this Irish Catholic family. The matriarch Eileen O'Neal, played by Martha Plimpton, is dealing with a divorce and her son that has recently come out as gay. "We're doing it with humor, it's a comedy obviously, so in a funny way it makes it kind of easier sort of to talk about things that are awkward or painful or difficult, you grasp it's easier to deal with opposition in that way in comedy. I'm not suggesting it's an easy thing to do, I just mean that I think people are more expose to it," Plimpton said. Noah Galvin plays her son, Kenny O'Neal, and it was his coming out that spurred the rest of the family to reveal their realities as well. Galvin says he loves playing his nature as this reveal AcclaimedactressMartha Plimpton said she didn't hesitate to say “Yes!’ when she was offered the role of Eileen O'Neal in the modern ABC sitcom, "The Real O'Neals." On the show -- which debuted March 2 and is based on the life of Dan Savage, a gay activist and creator of the exhibit -- Plimpton portrays the overbearing, fiercely proud and devoutly Catholic mom trying to cope after her teenage son, Kenny, played by openly gay actor Noah Galvin, tells the family he’s gay. “Honestly, Dan wrote me -- I can’t remember if it was a direct message or an email,” Plimpton explained in an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress, relaying how Savage, who is also the show's executive producer, reached out to her. “But he said, ‘You’re gonna be getting a script that’s loosely based on my life. And it’s a comedy, and I want you to play my mother.'” “You know, a facsimile of his mother,” she further explained. “Again, loosely-based. And I, of course, knew about his relationship with his mom, which was incredibly close and a profound relationship that went through a lot of changes and a big sor GREG IN HOLLYWOODBy Greg Hernandez on Mar 30, pm | Comments (2) | Martha Plimptons latest TV role is as the devout Irish Catholic mother of three children including a queer teenage son on the ABC sitcom The Real ONeals. I caught an episode last night for the first time and now officially love this show! Its a far sob from Plimptons previous sitcom, the terrific Raising Hope, and one that has run afoul with the Catholic League which has been critical of the show in an ad in The New York Times. Plimpton is not surprised. When anybody hears that its going to be a show about a Catholic family dealing with their gay son, they assume that were going to be making entertainment of Catholics, and its just not the case, the actress tells the Los Angeles Times. What were making fun of is the fear. Her personality of Eileen ONeal was not exactly thrilled when her 16 year mature son Kenny (played by Noah Galvin) came out as gay. The character I play is a homophobe, but shes a homophobe because shes based her entire value system on |
