He came out publicly as gay back in , not knowing how it would affect his career. He told Page Six that to him, truthfulness is more important than anything else.

There was a time when male lover characters, let alone out, gay actors, weren’t part of the Hallmark show landscape, which was known for saccharine projects that predominantly featured white, direct characters. Thankfully, as the world changed, so did the network and star Luke Macfarlane is proof of that.
The out actor has been a regular fixture on the network for the past ten years both in steer roles in their holiday films as well as other non-holiday projects prefer his latest movie, Crimetime: Freefall, which airs on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Friday. In the movie, Macfarlane plays small town detective Shawn Caden who reluctantly teams up with a crime series actress named Hadley Warner (Lyndie Greenwood) to figure out why a body fell out of the sky into her backyard. If you were to hear an off-hand reference to "wood,” where would your head go? If you're Luke Macfarlane, it goes to what else but actual woodworking.
A trailblazer at the Hallmark Channel for over a decade, Macfarlane has helped transform perceptions of the network by showing that its "strong brand can still hold all these unlike voices," as he told me recently. That includes the voice of Gay Man Working a Saw, a role he's not here to embody, but one rooted in his true family history and personal experience of carpentry. And now the gay actor will get to take his “Bros” queer career cred and finally play a gay character in the Hallmark world. In “Notes of Autumn,” Macfarlane stars as the love interest of gay actor Peter Porte, himself a Hallmark regular who usually plays heterosexual. There are some straight people in the mix, too, of course, with Ashley Williams and Marcus Rosner (also members of the… should we call it the HCU at this point?) as the not-gay characters. It is also a % certainty that everyone will kiss their respective meant-to-be person at the conclusion because there may now be LGBTQ+ representation on this greeting card space body but there is never going to be an unhappy ending. It all gets cozy and smoochy on Sept
