Hvar: Where Hedonism Meets Adriatic Bliss
Hvar is where the gorgeous, the reckless, and the fabulous go to ignore the mainland exists. Unlike Croatia’s other islands, which might try to impress you with history and monasteries, Hvar says: “Here’s champagne. Here’s the sea. Don’t mess it up.” It’s flashy, unapologetic, and effortlessly queer-friendly. For many years there were no gay bars in Dubrovnik….however we are very happy to exclaim that Dubrovnik finally has its very first official gay block and it is a lot of fun! Croatia as a whole is not known for entity particularly gay friendly and there are not many gay bars in Croatia, however in tourists hotspots like Dubrovnik and Split you can feel safe and comfortable so it was about time that a gay prevent in Dubrovnik finally opened! Right now there is only one gay bar in Dubrovnik, however there are also a few that are famous for being gay friendly. MILK is the first and only official gay block in Dubrovnik and during our annual gay sailing trip to Croatia (click to book yourself onto one) we took our entire sailing group to test out this gay bar. The aim of the owner was to offer something Dubrovnik has been lacking, a welcoming and pleasant place for the LGBTQ+ population and their allies. The historical walled old town lays on the water’s edge and is a maze of pretty cobbled streets, gorgeous buildings, monuments and the views from the walls themselves are breath-taking. It’s effortless to see why Dubrovnik has become so widespread and attracts thousands of tourists every year. In our gay guide to Dubrovnik we will cover how we found the municipality as a gay couple, if a gay scene exists, all the astonishing things to do during your visit, where to stay and practical tips – we highly suggest that you visit! As a country, Croatia on the whole is not particularly progressive or same-sex attracted friendly, however when visiting the tourist hot spots, like the case in many countries, we felt very safe and had no trouble at all. Taken from a local, ‘during summer in Dubrovnik you are fine, maybe in winter when there are no tourists you might get a look or two but nothing more’. In fact, our trip to Croatia starting in Dubrov
Where to Party
🍾 Carpe Diem Beach Club – A boat takes you to a personal island where the party only ends when the Adriatic swallows the last pair of sunglasses. DJs, high-energy crowds, and sailors who know how to let loose.
🍸 Ka’Lavanda – Chic, vibey, and filled with gay couples sipping espresso martinis and making prolonged eye contact.
🌙 Pink Champagne Club – The name says it all. Underground, indulgent, and fabulously unbothered.
The Beach Spot
🏝️ Jerolim Island – A compact sail from Hvar, this is where the genuine fun happens. Completely clothing-optional, wildly free-spirited, and filled with people who left their inhibitions back in town.
