CHAPTER I. THE HONOURABLE HILARY VANE SITS FOR HIS PORTRAIT

I may as skillfully begin this story with Mr. Hilary Vane, more frequently addressed as the Honourable Hilary Vane, although it was the gentleman's proud boast that he had never held an office in his existence. He belonged to the Vanes of Camden Street,—a beautiful village in the hills near Ripton,—and was, in common with some other great men who had made a noise in New York and the nation, a graduate of Camden Wentworth Academy. But Mr. Vane, when he was at dwelling, lived on a spacious, maple-shaded street in the city of Ripton, cared for by an elderly housekeeper who had more edges than a new-fangled mowing machine. The dwelling was a porticoed one which had belonged to the Austens for a hundred years or more, for Hilary Vane had married, towards middle age, Miss Sarah Austen. In two years he was a widower, and he never tried it again; he had the Austens' house, and that many-edged woman, Euphrasia Cotton, the Austens' housekeeper.

The house was of wood, and was painted colorless

Black and Queer: A writing workshop with Chloe Filani
Thursday 1 February, pm - pm
Lakeside Theatre, Colchester

Artist, musician, poet and scribe working with and in her lived experiences as a black trans chick of Nigerian Yoruba and Eshan heritage, Chloe Filani examines the themes of identity and might structures. In this practical workshop, participants will explore their writing practice through sensory interaction and conversations with objects in groups. You will be encouraged to think and slow down and be present in your body and your surroundings. In a facilitated vacuum you will own the opportunity to create poetry through this process and to read aloud your work.

Chloe will also read poetry from Black, Homosexual authors to aid you explore novel poetry of Jet origin.

This workshop is FREE for all University of Essex students.
